WASHINGTON — Today Congresswoman Laura Richardson made the following statements after learning about the mid-air collision of two small planes off of the coast of Long Beach last night.
“It is with great regret that I have learned about the collision of two small planes, five miles south off Long Beach Harbor last night. I think that I speak for everybody in Long Beach, and in the surrounding areas, in saying that the family members of the victims have our deepest sympathy.”
“My staff has been in contact with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and I can confirm that they have initiated an investigation into what went wrong last night. As a member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure’s Subcommittee on Aviation, I will continue to be in contact with the NTSB until we know what exactly went wrong and how we can prevent accidents like this from ever happening again.”
“In 1986, a plane crashed in our neighboring city, Cerrito, and killed 82 people. This accident could have yielded in even more deaths, given our large downtown population. It is mid-air accidents like last night that remind us that there are no casual flights and that the safety required in the skies, and for residents below on the ground, must be a priority.”
Congresswoman Richardson is a member of the House Committees on Transportation & Infrastructure and Homeland Security. Her district includes the city of Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrooke and Signal Hill.
