WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Richardson released the following statement on the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana, Typhoon Parma and the Samoan tsunami, which have caused mass destruction in American Samoa, Samoa, Cambodia and the Philippines:
“On behalf of the people of California’s 37th Congressional District and the nation, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of American Samoa, Samoa, Cambodia and the Philippines, and to the thousands of people of Samoan, Cambodian and Filipino descent who call Southern California home, in the wake of the destruction and deaths caused in Cambodia and the Philippines by Typhoon Parma on October 4th and Typhoon Ketsana on September 24th and in American Samoa and Samoa by the tsunami on September 29th.
“An estimated 28,000 Samoans, 50,000 Cambodians and 46,000 Filipinos reside in and near my district in Long Beach, West Long Beach and Carson. They are our neighbors, family and friends and are experiencing horrors like so many Americans did during the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
“The destruction caused by these typhoons and the tsunami has directly affected more than 2 million people across the Samoas, Cambodia and the Philippines and will require the assistance of the U.S., its territories and the international community. My staff and I, in conjunction with more than 50 non-profits, are facilitating efforts so the people affected and their respective families here will be able to safely start rebuilding their lives.”
Congresswoman Richardson is a Democrat from California’s 37th Congressional District. She is a member of the House Committees on Transportation & Infrastructure and Homeland Security. Her district includes Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrook and Signal Hill.
