WASHINGTON — Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson joined with educators, government officials and Congressional leadership to celebrate the accomplishments of five schools, including the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), for their extraordinary efforts to improve the outlook and future of their students in urban districts. The schools were honored by the Broad Foundation of Los Angeles at a reception at the U.S. Capitol.
“Utterly amazing, LBUSD for the fifth time was one of four finalists for the 2009 Broad Foundation Prize, receiving $250,000 to be used as college scholarship money for students in the district, which since 2003 has provided more than $1 million in much needed scholarships for students in our community,” said Congresswoman Richardson.
“Long Beach, in particular, demonstrated by once again being recognized by this prestigious organization what we already know, that this is a district of teachers, students, parents and administration who are second-to-none in improving the lives of students by providing a quality education, despite the challenges they face in their homes and often their communities as well,” Congresswoman Richardson added. “And as Broad Foundation Founder Eli Broad imparted to me, LBUSD is the best urban school district in the State of California.
“Superintendent Christopher Steinhauser and his team of school board members, including the eminently qualified adviser former Mayor Beverly O’Neil, through hard work are demonstrating their excellence and are highly deserving of this hard-earned national acclaim.
Congresswoman Richardson is a Democrat from California’s 37th Congressional District. She is a member of the House Committees on Transportation & Infrastructure and Homeland Security. Her district includes Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrooke and Signal Hill.
