WASHINGTON — Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson issued the following statement in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15-October 15 annually.
“During Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the Hispanic community and pay tribute to the extraordinary contributions Hispanic Americans have made throughout history, and continue to make to America every day. In California’s 37th Congressional District, the value and excitement of Hispanic culture is as alive and vivid as anywhere else in this great nation. With more than 40 percent of our district’s residents of Hispanic heritage, the many Hispanic lines and histories come together, with so many other diverse backgrounds, to weave beautiful and distinct communities of people, places and ideas.
Economically, culturally and politically, Latinos are a vital part of our district and the nation. As the fastest growing ethnic group in our country, the 47.5 million-strong Hispanic community makes America a better and stronger nation. And through several generations, American life has been enriched by Hispanic contributions in business, education, government and the arts.
“Despite the growth and progress of our Hispanic community, unfortunately, many Hispanic families have not fared well economically during the past several years. Millions have seen their incomes drop, or lost jobs, or have fallen into poverty. That is why immediately after taking office, President Obama worked with the Congress to take aggressive action to jump start the economy by enacting the $787 billion Recovery Act, the effects of which are beginning to be felt across the nation, including by the Hispanic families of the 37th Congressional district. But there is more to do to ensure that all Americans have the opportunities and resources to realize their dreams and contribute to our great country.
“I am proud to celebrate the contributions and heritage of our country’s Hispanic community and to encourage all residents in our district to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by participating in appropriate ceremonies and activities. All Latinos, like all Americans, deserve a meaningful opportunity to achieve the American Dream.”
