Congresswoman Richardson Announce Justice Assistance Grant for City of Los Angeles and Urges County Jurisdictions to Apply to the City for a Share of the Funds

WASHINGTON Congresswoman Laura Richardson has announced that the city of Los Angeles has been awarded a $7,316,821 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) from the U.S. Department of Justice.

“With this $7.3 million dollar grant, the residents of Los Angeles County will benefit from improved law enforcement, crime prevention and correction and treatment programs, giving them safer communities and better opportunities,” Congresswoman Richardson said. “I encourage the areas of the 37th Congressional District to act soon in applying to the city of Los Angeles for a share of these funds that are desperately needed in South Los Angeles and the Harbor area, funds which will help in protecting gang prevention programs and increasing our police presence.”

As the fiscal agent of the grant, the city of Los Angeles will award funds to jurisdictions in Los Angeles County that apply for a portion in single and joint applications. Applying jurisdictions can only use the fund for programs that fall under the goals of the JAG program, which includes a variety of uses, from officer salaries and overtime to community-based programs.

Congresswoman Richardson is a Democrat from California’s 37th Congressional District. She is a member of the House Committees on Transportation & Infrastructure and Homeland Security. Her district includes Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrook and Signal Hill.
